Running Fool

Back on March 3rd I took my Vipod out for the inaugural test run that became a test walk after about half a block.

Less than two weeks later I was surprised and thrilled to run half a mile. Of course the thrill part came after I had stopped, dropped, and rolled.

Just kidding about the drop and roll part.

Or at least the roll part.

Anyway, at some point mid-April I made it to .75 mile without stopping. And last week, aided by nostalgia and New Order (the Bizarre Love Triangle extended dance mix really goes on and on and on) I painfully pushed through to a mile.

Now I realize this is no biggie for my crazy runnning friends, but it's something I have never done before. Even with Mr. Harris' heckling in junior high P.E. But look at me now.

Ultimately, I'd like to be able to go for a quick run, say 20-25 minutes, and cover a few miles. Which means I'm going to have to increase my pace so I can go farther faster.

You know, to get it over with.

Because don't get me wrong -- I do NOT enjoy this.

Except for brief moments when a song on the Vipod puts a bounce in my step. This actually happened twice today. And there I was, cruising along like a runner.

It quickly passed.

this is what I noticed so far (3 weeks of experience speaking, ha ha) The first mile is always painful and NOT enjoyable. Only after 1.5 miles my legs do the work and my mind stops with the self-talk "only to the next tree. I want to go home. I have so much to do." When the 3rd mile is over I feel I could go on forever. I say push at a very slow pace to the second mile and keep the pace slow but increase the distance. Then the pace increase comes naturally. Upbeat music helps but sometimes the rhythm throws me off. Now I read books on tape.

I am proud of you. I do not like running either but you can do it! Run Sharon RUN!

Good for you! I love running! I feel great when I do it, okay, not exactly great, but it sure is refreshing. I have been building up bit by bit. I think my running partner wishes that I would run farther and faster... But she still meets me. :-)

You are impressive.

You SHOULD be proud. You may be the first Kirkham in history to successfully run a mile voluntarily!

Way to go on working on that mile! I have a VERY SLOW pace too. I was actually laughed at by a YW in our ward when I told her my pace. Sad. Put some "footlose" on you pod - some of the songs got me in the zone wiht their beat. Good old 80's.
